What is to be the fate of price of petrol

November last year (2007) saw the average price of petrol break the threshold of £1 per liter.

Why so much?

This lead to very large queues to petrol stations as drivers panicked that fuel would run out.

The FPE came to an end in 2000 mainly due to the fuel protests which saw lorry driver and farmer blocking oil facilities prevent oil getting to the pumps.

The duty on fuel rose by 2p in October 2007. 2009 is expected to see another rise of 1.84p

The rises reached 6% ahead of inflation in 1997 when the Labour party came to power.

Fuel Price Escalator - in 1993 the conservative government introduced the FPE. The fuel price escalator was an annual rise in the price of fuel to target pollution and ease pressure on the building on new roads.

Some unscrupulous petrol stations used this to their advantage and charge way above the average amount.

Can I save money on petrol?

There are things you can do to save money on petrol

Take advantage of supermarket/petrol station loyalty cards incentives.

Tescos: by using the Tesco’s clubcard when paying for fuel you will receive points
Morrisons: have a card that provides you with a £5 voucher that can be redeemed on shopping in store.
BP: nectar points can be earned when filling up at BP garages.
